>> New Adolescent Rheumatology Textbook Published Feb 2008 (2008-12-30 11:28:45) | ||||
|
Adolescent Rheumatology McDonagh JE, White PH, ed. Marcel Dekker Inc,
This is a clinical adolescent rheumatology text edited by and including several of the Birmingham DREAM team staff as chapter authors!! It also includes a chapter written by young people themselves!
In contrast to other rheumatology textbooks, this text emphasizes the adolescent specific aspects of health and disease, often missed in texts adopting a medical model to disease. The text however does not ignore the medical aspects but rather highlights the major differences from paediatric and/or adult presentations and cross references to other sources for more specific rheumatic disease information, using the ages to detail the truly adolescent aspects! It is this generic approach which makes this book unique. Where possible the evidence base is referenced and a clinical and practical approach adopted to each topic. The multidisciplinary nature of adolescent rheumatology is reflected in both the authorship and content. Furthermore, another unique feature is the inclusion of a chapter written by young people, providing them with a platform to get across their views as to what health professionals need to know about young people. Other novel chapter topics include adolescent health training issues for rheumatology professionals, quality of care approaches to the development of adolescent rheumatology services, communication with adolescents and parenting of adolescents with chronic rheumatic diseases. The target audience include multidisciplinary members of both paediatric and adult rheumatology teams – primarily Doctors, Nurses, Occupational therapists and physiotherapists. Also General Paediatricians and trainees in all the above professions.

Another year and another successful Break Away has passed!
We have just returned from our annual residential trip to Edale in the Peak District (kindly funded by the "Kids Like Us" charity). The weather this year may not have been up to it's usual standard but the activities, the chores and the BBQ certainly was!!!
A group of 16 young people and 4 staff attended this year's trip. We spent a day at the Hollowford centre completing high ropes courses, climbing walls, challenges and an afternoon's canoeing, then a day in Sheffield chilling at the bowling alley and cinema.
The 'Little Sister Challenges' were well completed also this year with the girls often taking the lead on the score board (I'm sure the boys will disagree!!).

Gallery 37 2006 Skateboards, plentiful cups of tea and a group of talented artists basically describes Gallery 37 2006! Gallery 37 is a project which is coordinated by Birmingham City Council and provides young people ( apprentice artists) an opportunity to work alongside professional artists and arts organisations in the city during the summer holidays. The satellite project at Birmingham Children’s Hospital offered young people who regularly attend the hospital a chance to work with a visual artist Matt Robinson and Minesh Chadva (aka George!) an artist from SAMPAD (Asian Arts Agency). This summer the young people were tasked to produce a collection of designs on skateboards which will be used as part of a wayfinding scheme in the hospital leading people to the playground. The group undertook a visit to mac ( midlands arts centre ) to see an exhibition of Matt’s work and spent two weeks experimenting with different drawing styles and techniques and finally creating the skateboards.
